kate nash concert
last night charlotte and i went to see kate nash. she was playing in an intimate little venue in oxford, which is quite lucky for us really, since (apart from it being conveniently near) she’s quite big in england now and i’m sure she could command a greater audience.
i don’t know if she’s in the charts in america, but here’s her single “foundations”.
i like the song a lot. there’s one line i especially like:
you said i must eat so many lemons…
‘coz i am so bitter.
i said, ”i’d rather be with your friends, mate,
‘coz they are much fitter”.
(in england, “fitter” can also mean “attractive”)
i really like that!
i love the way she says bittah.
she was very good in concert; she can properly play – not just a studio artist. she’s a particularly good pianist and plays with great passion and expression. she was also very warm and personable and you could see she was trying to engage with the audience and make eye-contact – which is very cool.
this one song on her album (which she didn’t play on the night) is very funny. its called “dickhead”.
why are you being a dickhead for…?
stop being a dickhead.
why are you being a dickhead for…?
you’re just fucking up situations.
hahaha!
the place where she performed used to be called the “zodiac” up until very recently. its one of those underground places where a lot of very good bands, like radiohead, first performed before they became big. as such, it has this kind of indie credibility which has seen a lot of up-and-coming bands and artists go there, or some really established ones performing there secretly. other bands who have performed there are “r.e.m.” and “rage against the machine”.

oh, that’s really cool you saw Kate Nash! i’m quite surprised she played there, since (as you said) she’s big now.
her songs are great and she is doing really well for herself. her dialect is distinctive (i assume it’s a south london accent?) – i really hope that her popularity will help in efforts to eradicate the word “chav” from the modern British lexicon. as far as i’m concerned it’s a poison word. i believe we need as much diversification as possible in every area of our society at present, so esp. well done to Kate.
Thanks for posting her vid. I like that accent of hers, her strong vocals – I’m with you on the way she said “bittah”
Going to get her album – although I really shouldn’t be buying so many albums!
Her name sounds familiar but I cannot remember hearing any of her stuff. This video/song is great and I’ll certainly be checking out more of her stuff online. Very cool that you got to see her in concert. She certainly seems like someone who would be fantastic in an intimate setting.
I really like the only song of hers I’ve heard, foundations, must see about getting the album at some stage.
HARRY:
yeah, i’m glad she’s doing well too! and yep, thats a south london accent.
DARK ORPHEUS:
her accent is cool, isn’t it! i’m really glad you like her
CARL:
glad you like it – and yes, very, very cool that i got to see her.
you’re right, seeing her in an intimate setting was just perfect for her kind of music. you felt very “there”, if you know what i mean.
FENCE:
foundations is cool, isn’t it. she’s also got one out now called “mouthwash” which is pretty good too. the whole album is strong, and quite varied actually.
I went to her show on Sat. April 19th in Philadelphia and I must say she didn’t impress me. The sound in the venue was terrible and I couldn’t hear the vocals at all which are her strength. Her piano skills are good but on the guitar she needs more practice. Compositions were sparse and repetitive which is rather sad since she has clever lyrics. Still needs to mature as a musician. Unfortunately for me I spent too much money and she dissapointed. Beware. Her show is not that strong.
