papier is geduldig

my mom wrote me an email yesterday and in it she was doing her usual stream-of-consciousness thing, just spilling her thoughts on the page.

after a while she commented on how nice it is just to ramble on and quoted a beautiful old afrikaans saying: “papier is geduldig”, which translates as “paper is patient”.

paper is patient … i really like that.

  1. What a beautiful quote…I really like that too. I’ll have to write that one down :)

  2. I like that too and am hereby stealing it :)

I wonder, is the internet geduldig as well

  3. I think that the first time I came across that saying was in Anne Frank’s diary, when I first read it at the age of 8 or so. She quotes it in one of her first entries as a reason for starting a diary. Paper is endlessly patient. People are not.

  4. Okay, who is the artist? That image is incredibly beautiful.

And paper is patient. I sent one of those stream of consciousness emails today myself. Whoa to him who received it. ha!

  5. i’m glad you guys like it too :)

    FENCE:

    steal away!

hmmm… is the internet geduldig…? i guess, if we were applying the sense in which the saying applies to paper, then perhaps “commentary areas” could be classified as patient…? but that doesn’t quite have the same ring to it…

or perhaps not? now that i think about it, internet communication is quite similar to normal, every day conversation, in that it happens so quick and near-instantanious, and people can often be quite impatient - if not in waiting for a response, then in the way that they can just skim what people write.

not that i think you were asking that question seriously or anything…!

    NYMETH:

i didn’t know anne frank also says that! and its so appropriate in her case, isn’t it?

i also like that addition of “endlessly”. “paper is endlessly patient”. nice.

    CARL:

ooh, carl, i don’t know! i just googled a search string of people reading and nabbed it! i’m sure i can find the site where i got it from again! i’ll let you know what i find. i’m glad you like it - its very much your taste, isn’t it (well, one of your (many) tastes)?

stream-of-consciousness emails are so nice. they’re very intimate. lucky to him who received it! :)

  6. carl, i found the website i got the picture from a blog which posted a series of paintings of women writing letters:

    http://devondesigns-mary.blogspot.com/2007/07/inspiration-friday-letter.html

the page has also taken a while to load for me…

she doesn’t unfortunately say who painted the painting…

  7. Oh, I like that, too. Very much.
