ice hockey in oxford

the other day i watched some ice hockey in oxford. i didn’t even know they played ice hockey in england – never mind in oxford! but you know what – it was great fun!

it was a game between the oxford city stars and the cardiff dragons and oxford won 8-3. i was really impressed by the quality of the play; because ice hockey isn’t really big here i was worried that the skill level was going to be a bit limited and that the game may be rather mundane. but it was very exciting and the players had enough skill to give their game a lot of variety.

i really liked the intimacy of the game as well, as, since the playing area is quite small one is really close to the action. there was also a lot of needle in the game, which added to the spice. oxford and cardiff hadn’t managed to beat each other in 3 previous games and the last one oxford drew in cardiff in the dying seconds of the game!

this game started in equally tight fashion as oxford only managed to score one goal in the first period. in the second oxford scored a few quick goals and suddenly the game opened up. the pace picked up and so did the aggression and i’m happy to report there were quite a few fights! 😀 the second period ended 4-2.

oxford made a blistering start to the third period and blew cardiff away. the more goals went in, the angrier the cardiff players became, and when the final whistle went the cardiff players were so frustrated that a big fight broke out. there wasn’t any blood, though, so i don’t know how big a fight it was. its a bit macabre, but i wanted to see some blood. if these people are going to fight and hit each other they should at least really hurt one another.

all in all it was a really fun night. i can see why people follow ice hockey – its a very engaging and intense sport and watching this game there was a lot more skill to it than i expected. if ever i get to america or canada in the winter i’d really love to see a proper nhl game!

Lots of fights in the NHL. Some say it’s better watching farm and secondary teams as they actually play hockey…skate, pass and make it through game without any blood on the ice.

Another sport I don’t watch. I do remember my dad listening to the games on the radio when the season didn’t last til almost summer.

Ohhh, now you’re talking a sport I actually understand! Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, I LOVE hockey! Glad you enjoyed the game!

And I hope you and Charlotte are having a wonderful Christmas season!

wow, thats a pity. i mean, i wanted to see a fight, but i don’t know if i’d want them to fight ALL the time!

“when the season didn’t last til almost summer”… yup, every sport has that nowadays…! and i don’t know one fan who likes it. its a real pity.

haha! good. its nice to have actually seen hockey played live, to know a bit more what this game is all about.

i hope you and your family have a great christmas too!

Other than the Olympics I’ve never been a big fan of watching hockey on television, but watching it live, even semi-professional teams, is really interesting.

You and Charlotte have a fantastic Christmas!!!
